Recent videos showing construction workers smoking on scaffolding have reignited controversy over the Wang Fuk Court fire in Hong Kong, which occurred on Wednesday and resulted in the deaths of at least 128 people. The blaze also injured numerous individuals and displaced nearly 900 residents from the Tai Po housing estate, where seven of the eight 32-storey towers were engulfed in flames due to the presence of bamboo scaffolding and renovation materials.

The footage, released on Thursday, has become a subject of intense discussion on social media, with some users suggesting that the smoking activities may have contributed to the fire. However, authorities have emphasized that the investigation into the fire’s cause is ongoing, stating that flammable materials and strong winds played a role in the rapid spread of the flames. There is currently no confirmation linking the workers’ smoking directly to the incident.

This incident marks the deadliest fire in Hong Kong since 1948, prompting investigations into potential safety violations involving the materials used in the renovation work. In light of the tragedy, three individuals associated with Prestige Construction, the firm responsible for the repair work, have been detained on suspicion of manslaughter due to allegations of using substandard materials.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has announced the establishment of a relief fund of HK$300 million for the affected residents, with additional support pledged by several major companies.
