Three men were arrested during early morning raids following a BBC News investigation into organized crime operations linked to high street businesses in the UK. Among those arrested were two Iranian men, aged 32 and 28, in Birmingham and the West Midlands, as well as a 43-year-old naturalized British citizen. They face suspicions related to facilitating illegal entry into the UK and illegal employment.
The BBC’s investigation revealed connections between over 100 mini-marts, car washes, and barber shops across locations from Dundee to South Devon, which are allegedly tied to a crime network. Andy Radcliffe, an assistant director at Immigration Enforcement, confirmed that an investigation is underway, involving various agencies such as HMRC and the National Crime Agency, prompted by the findings.
Radcliffe emphasized that this investigation is in its initial stages, aiming to address extensive abuses of the legal system. He also highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting potential consequences such as imprisonment and asset seizures. The Home Office has initiated an urgent investigation that includes cooperation with police forces nationwide, prompted by reports of a suspected Kurdish crime network operating illicit businesses and counterfeit goods.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged the importance of the investigative findings, citing them as evidence of systemic issues that attract illegal immigration. In response, the government announced funding for additional Trading Standards officers and increased enforcement activities to target illicit tobacco and vaping products in high streets.
Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp recognized the value of the BBC’s reporting while reiterating the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and supporting legitimate businesses affected by illegal competition.
