The East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents to contribute to local foodbanks and assist families facing financial difficulties this Christmas season. Community members are invited to donate food and household items to the East Riding Food Poverty Alliance or volunteer their time to support these efforts.
Donation points will be available at various locations, including leisure centers, libraries, and multi-service centers, starting from Friday, 28 November. Notable locations for donations include Bridlington Spa and South Cliff Caravan Park. The types of items requested for donation include tinned goods, cereals, pasta, rice, snacks, tea, coffee, toiletries, household essentials, and pet food.
Jo Ramsay, chairwoman of the East Riding Food Poverty Alliance, remarked that community support is crucial in providing not only food but also “hope, dignity, and a lifeline” to those in need. She highlighted the issue of hunger, indicating that it can affect individuals in proximity, including neighbors, colleagues, and families within the community.
According to the council, the alliance has delivered over 360,000 meals to individuals in crisis during the years 2024 to 2025, supported by the council’s regeneration and funding team. This information underlines the significant role local initiatives play in addressing food insecurity.
In addition to donations, the council is also seeking volunteers to assist with tasks related to food sorting, packing, and distribution. Councillor Lyn Healing, the cabinet member for communities and public protection, emphasized the importance of the alliance’s work in supporting vulnerable individuals in the community and encouraged residents to participate in the initiative throughout the holiday season and beyond.
