Video shows speed fire spreads in Hong Kong tower block

BBC Verify has analyzed video footage that appears to depict the early stages of a fire at the Wang Cheong House, a high-rise public housing complex in Hong Kong. This footage aligns with statements made by Derek Armstrong Chan, the deputy director of Hong Kong Fire Services, who confirmed the location where the fire originated.

The individual who posted the video on the social media platform Threads reported hearing banging noises prior to noticing the flames at 14:51 local time (06:51 GMT). They indicated that the first firefighters arrived approximately six minutes later, by which time the fire had already extended to the fourth floor.

The fire has reportedly affected seven tower blocks in the Tai Po district, resulting in the deaths of at least 55 individuals, with nearly 300 others still unaccounted for.
