Raymond Hager, a 95-year-old bus driver from Texas, has gained recognition as one of the world’s oldest active bus drivers. He continues to drive in his hometown of Wichita Falls because he enjoys the work and finds it difficult to remain at home. Hager has expressed his love for driving, stating, “I’ve always liked to drive – I still do,” and he intends to continue as long as he receives approval from his employer and physician.
Hager’s career in municipal bus transportation began around 1998, following a background as a farmer and crop-duster pilot. His early experiences included transporting cotton to a gin, which sparked his long-standing interest in driving. He appreciates the active lifestyle the job provides and enjoys interacting with passengers, noting, “I get more tired at home than I do driving.”
Health remains a priority for Hager. He undergoes monthly check-ups to ensure he is fit to drive, and he reports that his doctor gives him a positive assessment. Hager’s consistent performance has earned him respect within the community and from his colleagues.
On June 1, the Guinness World Records recognized Hager as the oldest active bus driver. Shortly thereafter, on November 18, which coincided with his birthday, the Wichita Falls city government declared it “Raymond Hager Day.” During this ceremony, the city’s mayor, Tim Short, commended Hager for being a shining example of lifelong purpose. Hager expressed gratitude for the accolades, stating, “I’ve been blessed – a little country boy – to achieve something like that.”
Hager previously planned to retire but has now indefinitely postponed that decision, emphasizing his continued enjoyment of his profession.
