Warner Music Group (WMG) has entered into a licensing agreement with the AI music creation platform Suno. This deal permits users to produce AI-generated music via Suno, utilizing the voices, names, likenesses, images, and compositions of artists who participate in the program.
WMG, which includes record labels that represent artists such as Ed Sheeran, Twenty One Pilots, Dua Lipa, and Charlie XCX, asserts that artists who opt in will maintain “full control” over the use of their likeness and music. However, specifics on how this control will be implemented are not disclosed.
Suno describes this collaboration as a means to introduce new creative opportunities for participating artists, potentially generating new revenue streams and allowing fans to engage with them in innovative ways. Users will be able to develop music based on an artist’s sounds while ensuring that artists receive compensation for their contributions.
In addition to the licensing pact, Suno plans to employ music licensed from WMG to enhance its music generation models, claiming that these upgraded models will exceed the capabilities of its existing flagship version. Starting next year, Suno will require users to have a paid account to download songs, with different subscription tiers offering a specified number of downloads each month.
