Thai woman’s cremation stopped after knocking heard on coffin

A woman who was presumed dead and scheduled for cremation at the Wat Rat Prakhong Tham Buddhist temple near Bangkok, Thailand, was discovered to be alive by temple staff. Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general manager, reported hearing a faint knock from the coffin just before the ceremony. Upon opening the coffin, he found the 65-year-old woman slightly opening her eyes and knocking on the side.

Her brother had been informed by local officials that she had died; however, Soodthoop noted that the brother did not possess a death certificate. As Soodthoop attempted to explain how to obtain the necessary documentation, staff again heard knocking from within the coffin, leading them to investigate further.

Once it was determined that the woman was alive, the temple’s abbot advised that she be taken to a hospital immediately. Medical evaluation later confirmed that she was suffering from severe hypoglycaemia, a condition characterized by critically low blood sugar levels. Reports indicated that she had not experienced respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.

According to her younger brother, the woman had been bedridden for the last two years, and her health had significantly declined. The family had traveled nearly 500 kilometers from Phitsanulok to attend the cremation ceremony, indicating the family’s commitment to the planned rites despite their unexpected turn of events.
