Alfie’s Arc, a community hub located in Leigh Park, Havant, plans to distribute 150 Christmas dinner hampers to families facing financial challenges during the festive season. Established last year by Lianne Hutchins and her family in memory of her son Alfie, who passed away from brain cancer at the age of seven, the organization provides ongoing support through food parcels, mental health resources, and various community initiatives.
Mrs. Hutchins emphasized the importance of the Christmas dinners as a means of giving back to community members who have supported their hub. She noted that many individuals, including those in full-time employment, are facing financial hardships. “By the time they’ve paid their bills and childcare, they’ve got no money left at the end of the month,” Mrs. Hutchins stated, highlighting the necessity of food banks and similar services.
Reflecting on her son’s spirit, she mentioned that he enjoyed helping others and would appreciate the initiative, saying, “He loved to help people and he loved food, so he’d be laughing, wherever he is.”
The volunteer-driven service has secured funding through grants and fundraising efforts, which will contribute to the Christmas hampers. However, the organization is also seeking additional donations of food and gifts to enhance the packages. Carl Hutchins, Lianne’s husband, urged community members to contribute, stating, “If we can just get any little bits to go in each parcel, that would be amazing.” The overall aim is to assist as many families as possible during a time when many are struggling.
