While this feature is intended to function as a personal shopping assistant, OpenAI has cautioned that the shopping research may occasionally provide inaccurate details regarding product prices and availability, recommending users to consult merchant websites for the most reliable information.
Users can enhance their shopping experience by answering a series of preference-based questions, which help filter options by price, intended use, and desired features. The system retrieves products that can be purchased directly from retailer websites. OpenAI has indicated plans to implement an Instant Checkout feature, which would allow users to make purchases within ChatGPT itself with select merchants.
The new feature is built on a refined version of GPT-5 mini, optimized for shopping inquiries. It sources product recommendations from reputable online sources, presenting up-to-date information regarding prices, availability, reviews, specifications, and images. Additionally, the system can utilize user “memory,” if enabled, which incorporates insights from previous conversations. Users will have options to express interest in related products or indicate disinterest.
Pro users will benefit from personalized recommendations in the form of “buyer’s guides,” which are tailored based on their past interactions with the AI. For instance, someone discussing e-bikes might later receive suggestions for relevant accessories.
