In diplomatic discussions, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism regarding a potential peace agreement following talks in Geneva. He noted that “tremendous progress” had been made and highlighted ongoing negotiations around a 28-point peace plan proposed by former President Donald Trump, which includes NATO’s role and security guarantees for Ukraine. Andriy Yermak, leading the Ukrainian delegation, confirmed progress and the pursuit of a “just and lasting peace.”
Trump, however, criticized Ukrainian leadership for perceived ingratitude towards U.S. efforts in supporting Ukraine, a statement that prompted a response from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy emphasized his country’s gratitude towards the U.S. for assistance and indicated that talks in Geneva would continue.
Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the need for continued EU financial support for Ukraine, while emphasizing the importance of rule-of-law reforms for Kyiv’s EU membership aspirations.
