Sony’s WH-1000XM4 headphones, first released over five years ago, continue to receive attention for their noise-canceling capabilities. Currently, Best Buy has a promotion offering them for $159.99, a reduction of $190, marking the lowest price observed this year. Alternatively, the newer WH-1000XM6 model is available for around $398 at various retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, and Target.
Although the XM4 model was previously held in high regard and replaced by the XM5 and XM6, it remains a competent choice in 2025. The XM4 features high-quality sound, a battery life of up to 30 hours, and effective active noise cancellation (ANC), although it may not match the improvements found in Sony’s more recent models. They allow for multipoint connectivity, facilitating connections with two devices simultaneously, and offer strong performance for voice calls. Additionally, a feature called Speak to Chat automatically pauses audio when the user begins to speak.
The XM4 model also includes wear detection, which halts playback when the headphones are removed and resumes it once they are put back on. Unlike the XM5, the XM4 can be folded, enhancing portability for storage in bags.
Choosing the XM4 over the XM6 means foregoing some enhancements found in the latest model, including better sound quality, more advanced noise cancellation, and improved clarity for voice calls. The XM6 further allows for charging while listening, although it requires managing two cables, as it does not support audio over USB-C.
