European leaders have expressed reservations regarding a United States proposal aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict, stating that the draft requires further refinement. This joint statement was made during the recent G20 summit in South Africa, highlighting that while the plan includes significant elements vital for establishing a just and lasting peace, concerns regarding borders and limitations on Ukraine’s military capabilities remain.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that the country is currently facing “one of the most difficult moments in our history” amid increasing pressure to accept the proposed plan, which has reportedly been perceived as favorable to Moscow. U.S. President Donald Trump has set a deadline of November 27 for Ukraine to agree to the 28-point proposal, whereas Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged its potential as a basis for a peace settlement.
The statement was jointly signed by leaders from Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Norway, along with two high-ranking officials from the European Union. The document emphasized the leaders’ commitment to sustainable peace, underlining the principle that borders should not be altered through force.
Additionally, the leaders raised concerns about the proposed restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces, asserting that such limitations could render Ukraine vulnerable to future aggression. The statement also noted that any implementation of related measures concerning the European Union and NATO would necessitate the approval of their respective member states.
