Seven bodyguards have been detained in connection with the murder of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, who was shot on November 1 during a Day of the Dead event. Manzo, known for his criticism of cartel violence, was shot seven times while attending the ceremony with family members, prompting immediate public panic.
Authorities from Michoacán state’s attorney general’s office stated that the guards were arrested for their probable involvement in “aggravated homicide, in commission by omission.” This follows the earlier arrest of a man identified as the alleged mastermind of the assassination, who reportedly has ties to a powerful cartel.
The arrests were conducted by both state and federal authorities, including the National Guard. Reports indicated that the arrests took place near the site of Manzo’s shooting. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the suspect was eventually subdued and shot by Manzo’s bodyguards.
Manzo had raised concerns about the extortion and threats facing local avocado growers from criminal organizations, and had previously called on the federal government to take stronger action against these groups. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has been implicated in his assassination, as it is known to engage in drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion, specifically targeting public officials who oppose its activities.
Despite the CJNG being viewed as the most formidable criminal gang in Michoacán, other factions also exist, contributing to ongoing violent conflicts over control of drug and smuggling routes. The situation raises questions about security and governance in areas heavily influenced by organized crime.
