Nothing’s Android 16 update puts a progress bar on the back of your phone

Nothing Technology has announced an update to its software, Nothing OS 4.0, which introduces several new features across its mobile devices, particularly emphasizing its unique take on Google’s Live Updates. Users can now utilize the Glyph Interface on their devices to monitor deliveries, rides, or timers with visual cues displayed through the dot-matrix on the Phone 3’s rear or the lighting system on older models like the Phone 3A.

The appearance of Live Updates varies based on the specific Nothing device in use. For instance, a demonstration illustrates how the Phone 3A’s light gradually illuminates in tandem with the update’s progress, while the Phone 3 features an animated progress bar on its dot-matrix display. Additionally, these updates can be presented on the lock screen.

The update also features the AI-powered Essentials App, which allows users to generate custom widgets by describing their needs to a chatbot. Other enhancements to the Nothing OS include more minimalist designs for native app icons, new lock screen clocks, and animations that have been optimized for improved responsiveness and tactile feedback during interactions.

Users can now operate two floating apps simultaneously, facilitating easier navigation between them through swiping gestures. The update introduces a darker mode option that boasts deeper blacks compared to the previous version.

Furthermore, the Phone 3 will receive device-specific features such as a “pocket mode,” which automatically deactivates the Glyph Matrix when the phone is detected to be in a pocket. Additional visual elements, like an hourglass display and Moon position tracking, will also be included.

The rollout of Nothing OS 4.0 is expected to begin with the Phone 3 and will extend to other devices in the lineup in the following weeks. Devices from the CMF series will receive the update by the end of the year, whereas the Nothing Phone 3A Lite is scheduled for an update in early 2026.
