During a meeting with his security cabinet, Putin noted that while Russia received the proposal—which has not been extensively discussed with the Kremlin—it remains committed to its military objectives and is prepared to continue fighting. US President Donald Trump has suggested that Zelensky will need to accept the plan; otherwise, the conflict may persist.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of unity among Ukrainians and indicated that the nation’s interests should be prioritized in the negotiations. He stated that he has been in touch with leaders from the UK, France, and Germany, who expressed ongoing support for Ukraine.
The US plan, which has emerged amid ongoing territorial battles in Ukraine and a domestic political crisis involving corruption allegations against top officials, proposes Ukrainian troop withdrawals from certain areas and restricts military personnel to 600,000. The plan also includes promises of security guarantees for Ukraine and an expectation that Russia will refrain from further territorial aggression.
As the conflict continues, reports suggest that Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukrainian territory, complicating the landscape of peace negotiations. Nonetheless, reactions from Ukrainians vary, with some expressing deep skepticism regarding the proposed agreements.
