Google has announced that its Pixel 10 phones will now support AirDrop interoperability, enabling users to share files with Apple devices directly, without Apple’s involvement. This update reportedly started rolling out immediately, first for the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL models.

After receiving the update, users reported successful file transfers to various Apple devices, such as iPads and MacBooks. The initial connection issue was resolved after restarting the receiving devices, highlighting the ability to bring files like receipts and videos between platforms seamlessly. AirDrop from the Pixel to Apple devices continues to function even with different operating system versions, suggesting a wide compatibility.

However, there is a requirement for the Apple device to be set to “visible to all” for the file transfer to occur, a step that some users might find inconvenient. Google’s senior vice president of platforms, Rick Osterloh, did not mention this feature during the initial Pixel 10 launch, leading to speculation about the timing of this release.

Looking forward, Google plans to expand this functionality to additional devices beyond just the Pixel lineup. There are concerns, however, about the potential for Apple to restrict access, similar to past incidents involving third-party services like Beeper that sought to integrate with Apple’s messaging ecosystem. Apple has been silent on this new development, raising questions about its long-term viability.

Interestingly, recent regulations from the European Union may have influenced Google’s ability to create this interoperability, as they compel companies like Apple to utilize more common technology standards. This could play a role in keeping AirDrop functionality available on Android devices. The situation remains dynamic, and users will need to observe how it unfolds and whether Apple will respond to this new capability.
