Meross’ presence sensor ditches the cord and adds Thread support

Meross has introduced a new version of its MS600 presence sensor, now designated as the MS605, which operates on battery power. This enhancement allows for more flexible installation options, as it is no longer necessary to hide a power cord.

The MS605 is powered by a single CR123A battery, which is estimated to last up to three years. However, battery life may diminish in areas with high foot traffic due to frequent activation. Currently, the sensor is available for preorder at a discounted price of $34.99 through Meross’ online store.

A notable feature of the MS605 is its compatibility with Matter over the low-power Thread protocol. Unlike its predecessor, which was Matter-compatible via Wi-Fi, the MS605 requires a Thread-capable hub for integration with systems like Google Home, Apple Home, or Alexa. This hub does not necessarily need to be from Meross.

In terms of design, the MS605 resembles the older model and includes an articulated mounting plate that allows for orientation adjustments of up to 90 degrees and rotation of 360 degrees. It has also received an upgrade to an IP67 waterproof rating, making it suitable for outdoor use. The sensor utilizes a combination of light, passive infrared (PIR), and 24GHz mmWave radar technologies to detect both motion and stationary individuals, while also differentiating moving inanimate objects from humans.

One potential drawback is that the range for motion detection has been reduced to 6 meters, down from 12 meters, and presence detection is now limited to 4 meters, previously 6 meters.
