Armed individuals attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, Nigeria, resulting in the death of one teacher and the abduction of at least 25 students. The incident occurred around 04:00 local time on Monday, according to police reports.
During the assault, the attackers engaged in a gunfight with police officers stationed at the school before breaching the perimeter and taking the students from their hostel. One staff member was killed while attempting to protect the students, and another was injured and is currently receiving medical attention.
Eyewitness accounts describe the attackers, referred to locally as bandits, as entering the school while firing weapons to instigate panic. Residents reported that the armed group subsequently led several girls into nearby bushland.
In response to the incident, police have deployed additional tactical units, alongside military personnel and local vigilante groups, to assist in the situation. A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently underway in the surrounding areas, focusing on forests and potential escape routes.
This attack is part of a troubling trend in northern Nigeria, where schools have increasingly become targets for armed groups, often for the purposes of ransom or leveraging negotiations with the government. The recent events in Kebbi State underscore the ongoing security challenges in the region, leaving the families in Maga anxious about the fate of their daughters.
