Jeff Bezos is reportedly taking on a new role as co-CEO of Project Prometheus, a startup he is partially funding. The company’s specific goals remain unclear, but it aims to develop artificial intelligence technologies intended to enhance manufacturing processes in sectors such as computing, automotive, and aerospace.
According to a report from The New York Times, Project Prometheus is one of the better-capitalized early-stage startups globally, having raised $6.2 billion in investments, including funds from Bezos himself. In his capacity as co-CEO, Bezos will collaborate with Vik Bajaj, the co-founder of the startup who has a background as a physicist and chemist. Bajaj previously held a role at Google X, known for its innovative projects, and later led the health tech company Verily, which is part of Alphabet.
The company has already assembled a workforce of nearly 100 employees, including individuals with backgrounds from notable organizations such as OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta. With this new position, Bezos is returning to an active operational role in a company for the first time since stepping down as CEO of Amazon in 2021. Since that time, he has also been involved with Blue Origin, a space exploration company that recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully landing its New Glenn booster.
The emergence of Project Prometheus raises questions about the potential applications of its AI technology and the impact it may have on various industries.
