Jurors in a significant murder trial in Australia recently visited a remote beach in Queensland where the body of victim Toyah Cordingley was found in 2018. Cordingley’s body was discovered by her father the day after she was reportedly stabbed multiple times and buried in a shallow grave. Rajwinder Singh, a 41-year-old nurse, is accused of murdering the 24-year-old woman on a Sunday afternoon in October 2018. Singh has denied these charges.
The jury, comprising ten men and two women along with three backup jurors, attended the site as the second week of the trial commenced. The visit aimed to familiarize jurors with critical locations relevant to the case. During the visit, no formal evidence was presented. The judge and legal representatives dressed in lighter attire due to the hot tropical climate.
The jury walked approximately 1.2 kilometers to the exact location where Cordingley was found. Markers indicated where her vehicle had been parked. Last week, the Cairns Supreme Court heard that Singh left Australia for India the day after Cordingley’s body was discovered, remaining out of sight until his arrest four years later.
Prosecutors allege that Singh confronted Cordingley, who was found in a bikini with most of her belongings missing. There were no eyewitnesses or a murder weapon recovered. However, authorities have presented circumstantial evidence linking Singh, including DNA findings and the movements of Cordingley’s phone, which were said to match those of Singh’s vehicle.
In his opening remarks, prosecutor Nathan Crane noted Singh’s rapid departure from Australia, suggesting it indicated guilt. The defense has not yet presented evidence but referred to Singh as a “placid” individual who was in the “wrong place at the wrong time.” The trial will move back to the courthouse on Tuesday.
