A man has been arrested in connection with a car bomb attack in Delhi that resulted in eight fatalities and 20 injuries last week. Authorities stated that the vehicle involved in the incident was registered in the name of the suspect, who is alleged to have conspired with the suicide bomber. The suspect resides in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The explosion occurred near a metro station adjacent to the Red Fort, a notable historical landmark in Delhi. This incident marked the first explosion of its kind in the city since 2011. The attack took place on a Monday evening at approximately 18:52 local time when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a traffic signal before detonating. Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that the explosive device was in a white Hyundai i20.
In response to the investigation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has seized another vehicle believed to belong to the suicide bomber for further examination. To gather information, the NIA reported that it has interviewed 73 witnesses, including individuals injured in the blast. Authorities have also been exploring connections to the recent arrests of seven men in Indian-administered Kashmir and the seizure of 2,900 kilograms of explosives from a location in a Delhi suburb.
Images from the explosion site revealed the charred remains of the vehicle involved, along with damages to several nearby vehicles, including autorickshaws. Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the attack as a “conspiracy,” emphasizing the government’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.
