Amazon’s Vega OS launch trick: cloud-streamed apps

Amazon is cracking down on illegal streaming on its Fire TV Stick

Amazon is implementing measures to block applications that facilitate illegal streaming on its Fire TV Stick, according to reports from multiple sources. This initiative targets both new and existing devices and is already underway in France and Germany, with plans for a global rollout in the coming weeks and months.

Fire TV Sticks and similar devices from other manufacturers have been associated with accessing pirated content, particularly in the realm of sports streaming. Users have historically been able to “side-load” unauthorized third-party applications, enabling access to illegal streaming services at lower costs compared to legitimate providers.

The effectiveness of this device-level ban may limit the ability to bypass location-specific restrictions through virtual private networks (VPNs). This shift in policy follows Amazon’s recent release of the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which operates on a Linux platform rather than the more easily modifiable Android system found in previous models. The new device is designed with enhanced security features and only permits app downloads from the Amazon App Store.

An Amazon spokesperson stated that the company has consistently worked to combat piracy and will now extend its measures to block applications known for facilitating access to pirated content, including those downloaded outside its official store. The spokesperson noted the potential risks involved with piracy, such as exposure to malware and fraud, while emphasizing a commitment to supporting content creators and protecting consumers.

A recent survey indicated that approximately nine percent of adults in the UK engaged in illegal sports streaming in 2025, which translates to roughly 4.7 million individuals. This marks an increase of about 200,000 from a similar survey conducted two years prior. The survey, carried out by YouGov Sport on behalf of a publication, also highlighted that Fire Sticks rank as the second most common method for illegal sports streaming, following unauthorized websites.
