Ryanair has announced that passengers will no longer be permitted to fly with printed boarding passes, effective Wednesday. The airline is transitioning to 100% digital boarding passes as part of an effort to expedite travel and reduce operating costs.
Passengers are required to check in online prior to arriving at the airport, with Ryanair indicating that approximately 90% of its total 206 million annual passengers are already utilizing this digital process. Those who do not complete online check-in will incur a fee of up to £55 for airport check-in services.
In contrast, passengers who check in online but are unable to access their boarding pass on their smartphones will be allowed to obtain a physical boarding pass at the airport without charge. Previously, this service incurred a £20 fee.
Ryanair has stated that this shift is aimed at increasing efficiency, lowering flight costs, and promoting environmental sustainability. Further details on the implementation and impact of this policy have yet to be fully addressed.
