Three dead and 15 injured in Tenerife tidal surge

Three individuals lost their lives and 15 others were injured due to strong waves impacting the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife. Emergency services reported that a woman was killed after being pulled into the ocean near the Puerto de la Cruz resort. A man also died in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, while another man’s body was discovered in the ocean near a beach in Granadilla.

Rescue teams advised the public to avoid coastal paths and refrain from taking pictures or videos of the turbulent seas as adverse weather conditions persist. A man who fell into the water at La Guancha was airlifted by rescue services but later died at the hospital. Another man was found floating near El Cabezo beach in the south and could not be resuscitated by lifeguards and medical staff.

At Puerto de la Cruz, a woman suffered a fatal heart attack, and around ten other individuals were swept out to sea, with three sustaining serious injuries that required hospitalization. A local waiter identified as Pedro described his efforts to save people from the waves, stating that he managed to rescue three individuals but could not save the woman who passed away.

Eyewitness Carlos mentioned that he attempted to warn spectators taking photos to move away from the dangerous waves, but his warnings went unheeded. Officials indicated that the Canary Islands, of which Tenerife is a part, are currently under alert for coastal hazards. They cautioned that sea conditions could deteriorate further, with expected swells reaching between two to four meters, emphasizing the need for “extreme caution” among both tourists and residents.
