A group of senators is urging President Donald Trump to maintain the United States’ competitive advantage in artificial intelligence (AI) development by denying China access to advanced chips and models. This bipartisan resolution, spearheaded by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Tom Cotton (R-AR), follows a recent remark from Trump suggesting he might consider allowing Nvidia to sell its Blackwell chip in China.
The resolution, supported by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Dave McCormick (R-PA), highlights China’s efforts to close the technological gap and advance beyond the U.S. in the deployment of cutting-edge AI models. It describes China’s lack of access to computing power as a significant barrier to its progress. To maintain U.S. leadership in AI, the senators are calling for the government to encourage U.S. companies to provide priority access to advanced AI chips, cloud infrastructure, and models for allies, while restricting access for China and other adversarial nations.
Coons emphasized the importance of preventing China from advancing its capabilities, asserting that such developments could pose threats to U.S. economic and national security. He stated that this bipartisan resolution aims to secure a future where leading AI systems are developed in the U.S. by American firms.
The senators also advocate for the ongoing enforcement of export controls that prevent American chipmakers, including Nvidia, from selling their most advanced technologies to China. This policy is considered particularly critical following Trump’s recent statements, which suggested a willingness to discuss the sale of Nvidia’s Blackwell chip with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
