Canon adds a 32-megapixel sensor and 7K video to the new EOS R6 Mark III

Canon has announced the EOS R6 Mark III, a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for both photography and videography. The camera features a 32.5-megapixel sensor, enhanced autofocus capabilities, and supports video recording up to 7K. It utilizes a new dual-card setup, including a faster CFexpress Type B slot, and is priced at $2,799 for the body only. Kits including the RF 24-105mm STM lens and RF 24-105mm L lens are available for $3,149 and $4,049, respectively, with a release date set for November 25th.

The EOS R6 Mark III seeks to cater to a broader audience that may not require the higher resolution of the more expensive EOS R5 Mark II. It represents an upgrade from the previous model, which had a 24-megapixel sensor. The new model can also record higher-quality video, accommodating 4K at 120 frames per second and RAW video at 7K/60p. It supports open gate filming for cropping flexibility and features a range of gamma settings, including Canon’s Log 2 mode.

Notably, there are some design changes, such as the replacement of dual SD card slots from the R6 Mark II with an asymmetrical slot setup of one CFexpress Type B and one SD card. This change allows for increased burst shooting capability at higher resolutions but may present challenges for managing different card formats, as CFexpress cards typically come at a higher price.

Canon is also releasing the RF 45mm f/1.2 STM lens alongside the camera, which offers a bright aperture for low-light photography at a competitive price of $469.99, shipping in early December. This lens, however, is not an L series model and lacks weather sealing, with additional costs for accessories like a lens hood.
