A nurse in Germany has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 10 patients and the attempted murder of 27 others. The individual, whose name has not been disclosed, was found guilty of injecting primarily elderly patients with painkillers or sedatives in an effort to manage his workload during overnight shifts at a hospital in Wuerselen. The offenses occurred between December 2023 and May 2024, prompting investigators to look into additional suspicious cases related to his career.
The nurse began working at the hospital in 2020 after completing his nursing training in 2007. During court proceedings in Aachen, prosecutors stated that he displayed a lack of empathy for patients who required more attention and accused him of behaving as if he were in control of life and death situations. Evidence showed that he administered large doses of morphine and midazolam, a muscle relaxant, to reduce his responsibilities during night shifts. He was arrested in 2024.
The court emphasized the severity of his crimes when imposing the life sentence, indicating that he would not be eligible for early release after 15 years. However, he has the right to appeal the decision. Prosecutors have also mentioned that exhumations are being conducted to identify possible additional victims, which might lead to further prosecution.
This case is reminiscent of another incident involving former nurse Niels Högel, who received a life sentence in 2019 for the murder of 85 patients in two northern German hospitals between 1999 and 2005, becoming one of Germany’s most notorious killers in modern history.
