Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, recently received the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering at St James’s Palace. During the ceremony, he shared that King Charles III personally handed him a letter containing a speech on artificial intelligence (AI) that the King delivered in 2023. Huang described the speech as highlighting the urgent need to address AI risks with “a sense of urgency, unity, and collective strength.”
The letter reflects the King’s concerns regarding AI safety, emphasizing the technology’s dual potential for both positive and negative impacts. The King asserted that the development of AI is as significant as the discovery of electricity, indicating the transformative potential of the technology for the UK and globally.
Huang noted that the King’s message advocates for the advancement of AI safety measures alongside technological innovation. The ceremony also recognized six other prominent figures in AI, including Professors Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, who have expressed concerns about AI posing an existential threat to humanity.
In contrast, former US President Donald Trump has called for the AI sector to prioritize rapid development over caution. This year, the AI Safety Summit was rebranded as the AI Action Summit. Senator Howard Lutnick has also discouraged using the term “safety,” suggesting it conveys fear.
Nvidia, valued at $5 trillion, is a leading company in advanced computer chips, integral to AI infrastructure. Huang expressed optimism about the UK’s position to leverage the ongoing industrial revolution in AI, urging stakeholders to seize the opportunity presented by substantial investments from major US tech firms in building AI data centers in the UK, termed “AI factories.”
