Google Gemini’s Deep Research can look into your emails, drive, and chats

Google has announced an update to its Gemini tool, which now allows users to access emails and documents during “deep research” queries. This feature aims to enhance the research capabilities of Gemini Deep Research, which was developed for generating comprehensive research reports rather than simply answering questions. The process begins with the chatbot creating a multi-step research plan, followed by web searches to compile a report that can be modified or exported to Google Docs or as an AI-generated podcast.

The integration of Deep Research with Google Workspace products enables users to conduct market analyses by having the tool examine relevant brainstorming documents, email threads, and project plans. Additionally, it can facilitate competitor reports by cross-referencing public web data with internal strategies, comparison spreadsheets, and team communications.

When users select the “deep research” option on Gemini, they can opt for one of four sources: regular Google Search, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat. This allows the AI to utilize content from Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and PDFs, as well as chat logs from Google Chat, to inform its research.

Currently, this feature is available exclusively on desktop, but Google has indicated that it plans to extend access to mobile devices in the near future.
