Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently visited troops stationed near Pokrovsk, a town experiencing intense conflict between Ukraine and Russia. He shared images from his visit to a command post in the Dobropillya sector, located approximately 20 kilometers north of Pokrovsk within the Donetsk region.
Kyiv’s military commander, Oleksandr Syrskiy, stated that Ukraine is increasing its efforts at the Dobropillya front to compel Russian forces to reallocate their troops, which could hinder their concentration in Pokrovsk. This strategic town has been a focal point of Russian ambition for over a year, serving as both a logistical hub and frontline battleground.
Zelensky indicated that Russian forces have recently infiltrated Pokrovsk and mentioned the presence of about 170,000 Russian troops on its outskirts. The battle is marked by claims and counterclaims from both Ukrainian and Russian sources regarding territorial control within the town. Gen. Syrskiy remarked that while Ukrainian troops are facing a substantial enemy presence, they are not encircled. Some Russian military bloggers have suggested that Moscow holds 90% of Pokrovsk, although this remains unverified.
The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War noted that Russian forces appear to operate effectively within the town, which has seen a significant decrease in civilian population and infrastructure damage. Meanwhile, tensions are escalating as Russian forces reportedly target the town of Myrnohrad, raising concerns about potential encirclement of Ukrainian soldiers.
Zelensky acknowledged ongoing challenges for Ukrainian forces, stating that a third of all frontline clashes occur in Pokrovsk. Despite facing overwhelming odds, he reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to retaining sovereignty over the region. Currently, Russia controls a significant majority of the Donetsk region and aims to capture further territories, although such advances could come with considerable costs.
In broader conflict developments, Russia continues to target Ukrainian cities. A recent drone strike in Odesa damaged industrial facilities and impacted local power supply, contributing to civilian casualties nationwide. Concurrently, Ukraine has targeted Russian industrial sites, including a petrochemical plant and a refinery.
