Jamaican musician Sean Paul has highlighted the extensive efforts needed to assist those affected by Hurricane Melissa, which recently struck the island. The storm, a category five event, resulted in severe destruction and at least 28 fatalities. Paul expressed concern for his children, who experienced the storm’s frightening effects firsthand. He described their state as “in shock” and “traumatized,” questioning what children in the storm’s epicenter might be enduring.
Although Paul’s family was in Kingston, where the impact was less severe, other areas, particularly to the west, faced significant damage. He mentioned friends in Montego Bay who had lost their roofs and are now actively helping distribute food and clothing to those in need. Paul has committed $50,000 to match donations for Food For The Poor Jamaica, emphasizing the overwhelming scale of the devastation.
He noted the challenge of supporting recovery efforts, stating that despite many people wanting to help, logistical issues remain, including damaged roads and communication barriers. Many affected individuals are unaware that aid is being organized due to lack of information.
In addition to Sean Paul, fellow Jamaican artist Shaggy is also coordinating disaster relief, delivering essential supplies to those impacted by the storm. Reflecting on the devastation he’s witnessed, Shaggy described the situation as heart-wrenching and unprecedented.
Both artists are collaborating on a long-term plan to raise funds, including a future concert set for December. This outreach aims to ensure that the community receives the support needed in the aftermath of the hurricane.
