Logitech has launched its Alto Keys K98M mechanical keyboard in North America, following its initial release in China and other regions. Priced at $149.99, the K98M features a nearly full-size 1800-layout with a compact design that still includes a number pad. Notably, it is designed to be fully hot-swappable with standard Cherry MX-compatible switches and employs an internal gasket mount to enhance typing comfort.
The keyboard has a two-piece plastic case with a translucent upper section and an opaque lower part, matching its white backlighting and the included PBT keycaps, offering color options in white, graphite, and lavender. It claims a battery life of up to 12 months with backlighting off, and it supports Bluetooth and Logi Bolt wireless connectivity across various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS/iPadOS, and Android.
While the hardware design is intended for broad appeal, there are limitations in software customization. The Logi Options Plus app allows basic adjustments, including backlight levels and battery saver mode, but only offers customization for 12 F-row keys, which may be less flexible compared to alternatives from other brands using software like QMK and VIA.
In terms of sound and typing experience, the K98M produces a relatively light, clacky sound that remains polite in office environments. The included marble switches offer a linear travel of 3.5mm with an actuation force of 40 grams, balancing smoothness with enough resistance for comfortable typing.
Despite being competitively priced, the K98M faces competition from smaller brands that may offer more extensive customization options and higher-quality materials. This launch marks a shift for Logitech toward features typically found in enthusiast keyboards, prompting speculation about future releases, such as a 75% version of the Alto Keys keyboard.
