A fire at a discount store in Hermosillo, Mexico, has resulted in at least 23 fatalities and 11 injuries, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on Saturday at a branch of Waldo’s, which is recognized as Mexico’s largest discount retail chain.
Witness accounts from multiple officials indicated that an explosion took place; however, the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, as stated by regional Governor Alfonso Durazo. The Sonora state public security secretariat has confirmed that the incident is not being treated as a deliberate attack against civilians.
Among the victims are children, including a 15-year-old girl who was hospitalized. Images from the scene depict thick black smoke rising from the building, with flames having spread to vehicles parked outside. After the fire was brought under control, scorch marks were visible on the shop’s doors and windows, with significant damage observed.
In a video address, Governor Durazo expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring them of his solidarity. He announced the initiation of an “extraordinary, transparent and thorough” investigation aimed at uncovering the incident’s causes and identifying responsible parties. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also extended her sympathies on social media, offering condolences to those affected.
Waldo’s stores, which are widely present across Mexico, play a prominent role in local communities. This fire occurred during a significant period, as the country was observing the Day of the Dead, a traditional celebration to honor deceased loved ones. As a result of the tragedy, the state government has announced the cancellation of cultural events that were scheduled for the following day.
