Trump stated that the new black and white marble is more fitting for the historical context of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and suggested it might resemble the original materials used.
This bathroom is located within the office and cabinet room used by Lincoln, which underwent restoration by former President Harry Truman in the late 1940s. The area’s previous decor included green and gold wallpaper, according to the White House Historical Association. The renovated bathroom now features gold fixtures and accents for the sink, bathtub faucet, and shower door, along with a chandelier. The White House indicated that this renovation was privately funded and did not incur costs to taxpayers.
Trump’s renovations have drawn criticism from conservation groups and political opponents who argue that the changes may disrupt the classical aesthetic of the White House. Although Trump previously mentioned that his new ballroom in the East Wing would not affect the existing structure, he later clarified that some parts would need to be demolished. Funding for the ballroom is reportedly provided by Trump and his donors.
In response to the bathroom renovation, Democrats have accused Trump of prioritizing aesthetic changes over addressing critical issues, such as the ongoing government shutdown, which is centered around health insurance subsidies.
