Ben Stringer from Key Yachting reported that securing sales has become increasingly challenging in the current climate, linked to economic uncertainty. Sales data indicate a 12% drop in vessels under 50 meters, primarily attributed to declines in sailing yachts between 30 to 40 meters in length.
The luxury boat sector, which adds approximately £4.7 billion to the UK economy, remains vibrant, with around 90,000 visitors attending the Southampton show. Many attendees are affluent, and despite tax concerns, some are still willing to invest in new vessels. However, the cost-of-living crisis and rising interest rates have altered market dynamics, making it harder for middle-income buyers to purchase yachts.
There remains a discerning group of cash buyers who can approach purchases without financial constraints. Meanwhile, significant increases in boat prices over the last several years have changed buyer profiles, now making it more challenging for those previously able to afford yachts outright. The complexities of boat purchases also include various taxes and logistics, which can deter potential buyers.
