Researchers have decoded TikTok’s viral Bold Glamour filter

A recent study published in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open analyzed TikTok’s “Bold Glamour” filter, revealing that its artificial intelligence produces subtle changes in facial features that resemble common cosmetic procedures. Released in early 2023, the filter quickly garnered attention for its realistic effects, which are achieved through advanced technology, possibly using a generative adversarial network to create a modified version of the user’s image in real-time.

The study included images of 10 female participants, comparing their standard photographs with those enhanced by the filter. Researchers utilized automated software to measure changes to nearly a thousand facial points as well as manual observations to assess alterations in skin texture and makeup appearance.

The analysis indicated that the filter increased facial dimensions and refined features such as the nose and lips, which became fuller. Additionally, it significantly smoothed skin, reducing signs of aging and imperfections. These modifications mimic results from non-surgical treatments, raising concerns about setting new beauty standards and influencing self-perception among users.

While the findings could inform aesthetic medicine by aiding visual consultations, the study also cautioned about unrealistic beauty ideals and their psychological impact, particularly for individuals with body image issues. Limitations included a small participant sample, suggesting the need for broader research.
