France’s consumer protection agency, the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF), has submitted a report to authorities regarding the fast fashion retailer Shein. The report alleges that Shein was advertising products described as “sex dolls with a childlike appearance” on its website.
The DGCCRF indicated that the way these items were categorized and described made it challenging to separate them from potential child pornography. Following the complaint, Shein acknowledged the issue and stated that the dolls were removed from its website as soon as the company became aware of the concerns.
In response to the incident, Shein mentioned that it is investigating how these listings bypassed its usual screening processes. The company is also conducting a thorough review to identify and eliminate any similar items from its platform, particularly those listed by third-party vendors.
Additionally, the DGCCRF’s report has been forwarded to French prosecutors and the country’s media regulator, Arcom. This development comes shortly before Shein is scheduled to launch its first permanent physical store in the world, located in a department store in Paris.
