OpenAI is introducing the option to purchase additional video generation credits on its platform Sora. This move follows the company’s indication that it may reduce the number of free video generations offered in the future. Currently, users of the Pro model receive 100 free video generations daily, while other users receive 30. Bill Peebles, head of the Sora team, stated that the platform’s current economic model is “completely unsustainable,” noting that many users are dissatisfied with the limits of free generations.
For those who wish to create more videos, additional credits can be bought at a cost of $4 for ten extra generations, according to Sora’s listing on the Apple App Store. The number of credits required per video can vary based on factors such as length and resolution. If users reach their free limit, they will be prompted to buy more credits through the App Store. These credits will remain valid for 12 months and can also be used on OpenAI’s coding platform Codex.
Peebles suggested that users may soon encounter the limits more frequently, hinting at a future reduction in free generations to accommodate the platform’s growth. While specific details have not been disclosed, he assured users that OpenAI would communicate any changes transparently.
The development of paid video generations aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to monetize Sora and expand its features, including functionality for clip stitching, leaderboards, and cameo appearances. The latter feature allows users to create deepfake avatars, which could soon involve monetization options for creators. As OpenAI shifts from its previous hands-off approach to copyright issues, this pilot program might provide rights holders the choice to charge for the use of particular characters or likenesses, potentially limiting the questionable content that has previously emerged on the platform.
