Universal Music Group (UMG) has announced strategic agreements with AI startup Udio to address copyright infringement litigation and to license music for a new AI-driven music platform. This marks a notable development in the ongoing dialogue regarding AI’s role in the music industry, with similar licensing agreements anticipated in the coming weeks.
The agreement reportedly includes compensation and aims to provide additional revenue opportunities for UMG’s artists and songwriters. Udio, known for its project “BBL Drizzy,” plans to launch this new subscription-based platform in the next year. Last year, UMG, along with major music labels Sony and Warner, filed lawsuits against Udio and other startups such as Suno for widespread copyright infringement.
UMG’s roster features prominent artists, including Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, and Ariana Grande. The company suggests that the forthcoming tool will enhance user engagement by allowing creators to customize, stream, and share music effectively. Details regarding potential subscription costs have not yet been disclosed.
During the transition to this new platform, Udio’s existing music-making tool, which allows users to create songs with minimal input, will remain operational. However, content will be stored “within a walled garden,” and the company plans to implement security measures, such as fingerprinting, to protect intellectual property.
