Withings has introduced the U-Scan, a non-invasive device designed to be installed in toilets for monitoring various health metrics, first announced at CES 2023. Unlike other health-tracking toilet devices, such as Kohler’s Dekoda, which uses a camera for analysis, the U-Scan works by detecting and sampling urine. It tests the urine with replaceable cartridges and sends results to the Withings app, providing health improvement tips based on the data collected.
The U-Scan is launching in the U.S. and Europe and offers two cartridge options. The U-Scan Nutrio measures four urinary biomarkers, including hydration, ketones, and vitamin C, to monitor nutritional health. The U-Scan Calci, on the other hand, tracks parameters like calcium levels to assess kidney health and the risk of kidney stones. A third cartridge for reproductive health that was announced previously will not be available at launch. Initially, the device awaited FDA clearance, but Withings now categorizes it as a “wellness product,” which does not require such clearance.
The U-Scan is priced at $349.95 for the Proactive option, which includes the device, a charging and cleaning station, access to the Withings Plus service, and a single Nutrio or Calci cartridge with 22 tests over three months, based on two weekly measurements. An Intensive option is available for $429.95, including two cartridges and 44 tests, allowing for more frequent testing. Users can subscribe for regular shipments of replacement cartridges, priced at $99.95 each or $179.95 for a pair.
