Russian forces are intensifying operations in eastern Ukraine, with a reported foothold in Pokrovsk, a strategic hub. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian troops outnumber Ukrainian forces in the area by 8 to 1, though he insisted that Russia has not achieved its objectives.
Pokrovsk has been a target for Russia over the last two years, as its capture would enhance Moscow’s position in the Donetsk region and facilitate access to nearby fortified towns including Kramatorsk and Slovyansk. Zelensky mentioned drone imagery indicating approximately 200 Russian soldiers are present in the town.
Describing the situation as challenging, Zelensky noted ongoing fierce fighting and the presence of “sabotage groups” in Pokrovsk. He contested claims from Russia’s Chief of General Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, that Ukrainian troops had been completely encircled. Concurrently, Russia’s defense ministry claimed its forces had surrounded Ukrainian troops near the main railway station and had cleared certain districts.
Ukrainian soldier Artem Pribylnov denied that Ukrainian forces were trapped and acknowledged that warfare has become increasingly technological, making navigation more dangerous due to drone surveillance of access points.
Capt. Hryhoriy Shapoval, spokesperson for Ukraine’s East operational group, reported that 79 attacks had been repelled near Pokrovsk, representing a significant portion of all assaults across the front line. He stated that deteriorating weather had hindered Ukrainian countermeasures against advancing Russian troops.
This conflict over Pokrovsk reflects the substantial costs associated with shifting territorial lines, as both sides employ drone technology to strike deep into enemy territory. With around 20% of Ukrainian land under Russian control due to the ongoing conflict, Zelensky emphasized the necessity for sustained financial support from European allies, as Kyiv’s defense capabilities are strained.
Efforts to redirect frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine have faced legal challenges and were recently stalled at an EU summit. Zelensky also expressed hope that a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping could lead to reduced Chinese support for Russia.
