Residents in parts of Norfolk are receiving support to help mitigate rising household expenses as winter approaches. The King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council is initiating a series of “Beat the Bills Roadshow” events in various locations, including Hunstanton, Downham Market, and Dersingham. The program aims to address financial concerns before they escalate to the point of potential homelessness or reliance on illegal money lenders.
During a recent event at Hunstanton’s Helping Hands Cafe, attendees voiced their anxieties regarding increasing energy costs and food prices. Among those seeking assistance was Hillary Letch, a pensioner from Hunstanton, who expressed concern about managing her finances following the death of her husband. Letch mentioned her adjustments, such as reducing visits to the groomers for her dog and dining out less frequently, as a means to cope with her reduced income.
The council’s initiatives include the Lily Project, which focuses on connecting residents to valuable resources regarding debt, benefits, and energy savings. Rebekah Bensley-Mills from the project noted that they were distributing energy-efficient items like light bulbs and low-flow shower heads to attendees.
Another participant, Richard Carter, shared his experience at the roadshow, highlighting his efforts to minimize gas and electricity usage. He raised concerns about the rising standing charges imposed by energy suppliers, questioning the efficacy of energy savings in light of these increases. Ofgem has indicated plans to implement a lower standing charge by January but acknowledged that energy prices may not decrease.
The council anticipates reaching hundreds through these roadshow events, emphasizing the importance of communication in tackling financial difficulties. Jo Rust, a cabinet member, stressed that individuals facing money issues should seek assistance rather than resorting to short-term, potentially harmful solutions.
