Trump does not rule out seeking third term

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed an interest in the possibility of pursuing a third presidential term, stating he would “love to do it.” However, he has dismissed the idea of running for vice president in 2028, which some supporters suggested as a way to bypass the constitutional limit on presidential terms. Trump labeled that suggestion as “too cute” and asserted that it “wouldn’t be right.”

While the exact strategy for a potential third term remains unclear, former Trump strategist Steve Bannon indicated that there is a “plan” in place to secure Trump another term in the future. During a recent flight to Japan, Trump commented that he would be “allowed” to run for vice president but reiterated he has no intention of doing so, suggesting that it would not be well-received by the public.

Trump noted that despite not actively contemplating a third term, he currently enjoys favorable polling numbers. He also mentioned potential successors, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whom he deemed “unstoppable.” Additionally, he contrasted his team with Democrats, stating they lack the same caliber of candidates.

The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits any president from seeking a third term. To repeal this amendment would require support from two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or a constitutional convention initiated by two-thirds of state legislatures, making such an outcome unlikely.

Bannon, a longtime supporter of Trump, claimed recently that preparations are underway for Trump to return to the presidency in 2028, urging the public to accept that possibility. In past statements, Trump had suggested that he would “probably not” run again, though he later indicated he was serious about the idea.

As the 2028 election approaches, interest among Democratic candidates is also building, with figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris discussing their potential candidacies.
