A suspect has been arrested in connection with an alleged attempted rape incident on a train near Paris, which gained significant attention after footage of the event surfaced on social media. The victim, identified as 26-year-old Brazilian national Jhordana Dias, reported that the attack occurred earlier in the month when a man boarded the train, pushed her, and attempted to remove her underwear. A fellow passenger recorded the incident after hearing Dias’s screams, capturing the assailant fleeing as the train arrived at a station.
According to local reports, the suspect was apprehended by transport police in Mantes-la-Jolie, north-west of Paris, on Friday evening. Investigators managed to trace him, although details of this process have not been disclosed. At the time of his arrest, he did not possess any identity documents but claimed to be a 26-year-old Egyptian national. He is currently in custody.
The alleged assault took place on October 15 between the Choisy-le-Roi and Villeneuve-le-Roi train stations, located south-east of Paris. In the video, a man wearing a black tracksuit and cap can be seen approaching Dias amid her cries for help, just before he exits the train and flees down the platform.
The individual who filmed the altercation, referred to in media reports as Marguerite, is being recognized for her role in potentially preventing a more serious attack. Dias, who does not speak French, filed a police complaint with the assistance of her brother, who translated her statement. The incident has sparked broader discussions regarding women’s safety on public transportation in France. Since then, two additional women have come forward to report similar experiences involving the same suspect.
