Nike says its first ‘powered footwear’ is like an e-bike for your feet

On Thursday, Nike introduced Project Amplify, which it describes as “the world’s first powered footwear system.” This product, developed to assist users with enhanced walking and running efficiency, is not aimed at professional athletes but rather at those looking to engage in more physical activity with less effort. Specifically, it utilizes a lightweight robotic system to increase speed, similar to how e-bikes provide pedal assistance.

The first version of Project Amplify was created in collaboration with robotics partner Dephy. Nike notes that it is not targeted at competitive runners seeking to improve their race times. Instead, it is designed for individuals who want assistance to go faster and farther, likened to the effect of having an additional set of calf muscles for everyday movement.

The design of Project Amplify resembles an ankle brace and includes components such as a motor, drive belt, and rechargeable battery, all neatly integrated into the system. It is intended for users running at a pace of approximately 10-to-12 minutes per mile. Development has involved over 400 athletes over the past few years, and while it remains in the testing phase, Nike plans to bring the product to consumers “in the coming years.”

In addition to Project Amplify, Nike has unveiled several other innovative initiatives, including footwear inspired by neuroscience and advanced cooling technology for its athletic wear. The company continues to explore new ways to enhance athletic performance and consumer experience.

(Note: A correction was made regarding the intended 10-to-12-minute mile pace for Project Amplify, clarifying that it refers to running rather than walking.)
