Microsoft’s Copilot Mode is an integrated AI feature within the Edge browser, merging AI-generated responses with search outcomes and navigation in a single interface. This mode can utilize all open tabs, allowing users to request summaries from multiple windows or compare products across them. Initially released as an experimental feature, it is now widely available for users, alongside additional functionalities in a limited preview, such as the Copilot Actions feature that can perform tasks like unsubscribing from emails or making reservations.
Users should be aware that Copilot’s functions can be inconsistent. Prior to initiating an action, Copilot provides a disclaimer indicating that the tool is “intended for research and evaluation purposes” and may contain errors. For instance, it inaccurately reported deleting an email, failed to send an email composed in Gmail, but successfully unsubscribed from a mailing list. Similarly, when attempting to book a reservation at the Hard Rock Cafe for November 26th, Copilot mistakenly selected October 26th instead.
Additionally, Copilot Mode in Edge has the capability to utilize browsing history to enhance response quality, contingent upon user permission. Another feature in preview, called Journeys, organizes browsing history into relevant topics and offers search suggestions based on frequent interests. While personal experiences with the feature varied, it appears to have the potential to assist users in revisiting subjects of interest.
To activate Copilot Mode, users can download the Edge browser and toggle the feature on via Microsoft’s website. Users located in the U.S. can also enable Copilot Actions and Journeys within the preview options.
