Nike has unveiled new performance apparel designed with climate change considerations, featuring its Aero-FIT performance cooling technology. This technology is set to debut in football kits for federations participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Aero-FIT technology aims to enhance sweat management by increasing airflow between the skin and fabric. According to Nike, this innovation allows for more than double the airflow compared to their previous athletic apparel. The material used for these new kits will be made entirely from textile waste, which addresses the environmental issues associated with synthetic fabrics derived from fossil fuels.
Concerns have been raised about potential heat exhaustion risks for athletes and fans during the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in July across Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Out of the 16 host cities, 14 are anticipated to experience extreme heat during the event, as reported by the BBC.
Nike’s announcement highlights the challenges athletes face in today’s changing climate, stating that they are competing in a “hotter, wetter world.” This contextualizes the company’s efforts to innovate in performance apparel amidst these environmental challenges.
