Copilot is getting more personality with a ‘real talk’ mode and group chats

Microsoft has initiated a rollout of significant updates to its Copilot AI assistant. Key features include a new group functionality, memory capabilities, and an optional “real talk” mode aimed at enhancing interactions.

The Copilot Groups feature allows up to 32 people to engage in a collaborative chat, targeting users who need to plan or address problems collectively. According to Microsoft’s Jacob Andreou, most usage is expected to occur in smaller groups rather than in larger, ongoing group chats.

Currently, Copilot Groups is being introduced for the U.S. consumer version only, excluding business-focused Microsoft 365 Copilot. However, future updates may expand its application in workplace settings.

Another notable update is the “real talk” mode, which adapts to the user’s tone and offers more nuanced responses. Unlike earlier iterations of Copilot, which occasionally provided impolite replies, this mode aims to incorporate more personality while maintaining a level of challenge in discussions. The real talk feature is selectable from a dropdown menu and is limited to text interactions.

Furthermore, Copilot’s memory features are enhancing its capacity to remember personal details about users and their preferences. Users will have control over what the AI retains, with options to view and delete stored information through conversational prompts. For example, users can instruct Copilot to forget specific details about individuals in their lives.

Microsoft is also upgrading the way Copilot handles health-related inquiries by relying on credible sources like Harvard Health, thus aiding users in finding appropriate healthcare professionals based on various preferences. Additionally, Copilot’s voice mode will see the introduction of a new character named Mico, creating a more interactive experience with real-time expressions.
