Tens of millions of crabs have begun their annual migration on Christmas Island, transforming the landscape into a striking display of red. Christmas Island, situated off the coast of mainland Australia and near the Indonesian island of Java, experiences this migration each summer, during which approximately 50 million crabs travel from their habitats to the beaches to spawn.
To facilitate their journey across various obstacles, such as roads, special crab bridges have been constructed on the island. Local radio stations provide updates on the crabs’ movements to ensure that residents and visitors are informed during this significant period.
The migration is expected to reach its peak with a major spawning event occurring around mid-November, followed by a secondary spawning event approximately one month later, as noted by Parks Australia. It is anticipated that baby crabs will begin returning to the shore in the new year.
