Remedy CEO steps down following FBC: Firebreak’s disastrous launch

Tero Virtala has stepped down as CEO of Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind the game Control. This decision comes shortly after the launch of their new multiplayer title, FBC: Firebreak, which did not meet expectations. Markus Mäki, Remedy’s chief product officer and a co-founder of the studio, will take over on an interim basis while the company begins the search for a new CEO.

Remedy’s strategic shift to a multi-project model, which includes the development of Control 2, remasters of Max Payne, and a new undisclosed game, was partly intended to mitigate the impacts of potential failures like Firebreak. Virtala has previously noted the importance of each title to the independent studio, emphasizing that while the company is less reliant on any single game than in the past, all releases remain crucial.

The decision regarding Virtala’s departure signals a significant moment for Remedy as it navigates the complexities of the gaming market and the reception of its latest project.
